Our projects

Since 2022, we have digitalised referral hospitals and clinics in three provinces of the DRC, and supported public institutions in their digital transformation.

Digitalising four general referral hospitals in Sud-Ubangi

The challenge

Four hospitals far from Kinshasa, without reliable electricity or internet, running their finances and patient records on paper.

What we did

Installed a dedicated solar power system, satellite internet and Wi-Fi across hospital departments. Deployed OpenClinic GA: registration, billing, cash desk, pharmacy, laboratory and inpatient care. Recruited and trained five local IT staff posted to the hospitals. Set up database backup and replication. In 2026, connected OpenClinic GA to the ERPNext management system in Gemena and Tandala.

Results

Billing and financial operations computerised. From June to September 2026, refresher training for every user in the four hospitals. Annual on-site technical supervision by Prof. Frank Verbeke.

The challenge

Extending the Sud-Ubangi experience to Tshopo, in an urban hospital in Kisangani and a rural hospital reached by river.

What we did

Installed the infrastructure (solar power, networking, servers), deployed OpenClinic GA, and trained users and four local IT staff. In April 2026, extended the network to every ward of Isangi hospital (surgery, maternity, paediatrics, internal medicine, emergency, pharmacy) and set up a satellite connection.

What we are doing

Installing a 4 kWh stand-alone solar system and a local network in each centre, deploying a compact low-power server and training users. The goal: connect primary care to the referral hospital on the same software platform.

The challenge

Replace a paid, poorly interoperable electronic medical record with an integrated system covering every workflow in the clinic.

What we did

Wi-Fi network analysis and baseline assessment. Steering committee set up in October 2025. Phase 1: administration and finance, laboratory, imaging and pharmacy. Phase 2 in 2026: medical records. Monthly technical assistance and a refresher programme for all staff from October to December 2026.

Enabel, funded by the European Union

Study led by Prof. Frank Verbeke and Dr Ernest Mbo Ilenga: inventory of equipment and power sources, analysis of digital skills by professional group, social network analysis in each facility to measure the human factors of success, and a costed roadmap covering the provincial health division, health zones, referral hospitals and health centres. This study laid the foundation for the 2022 deployments.
